ASOKALAYAM AYURVEDA CHIKITSA KENDRAM & RESEARCH CENTER

Asokalayam is an Ayurveda Chikitsa Kendram and research center. The word Asokalayam has its roots in Sanskrit: – Asoka & Alaya. Asoka means absence of sorrow and Alaya means residence. Combination of these two words illuminates the meaning of a place without sorrow. Asokalayam is a place where all the physical and mental sufferings are resolved.

In ancient times the village Thiruvegappura itself was familiar as Asokalayam. The Lord of Thiruvegappura temple was known as Asokalayeshan on the premises of whom this hospital is located now. This is a healing center that focuses on preserving authentic practice of Ayurveda and its traditional study. Asokalayam was founded in November 15th 2002 with its treatment section called Narayanalayam, under the guidance of Dr. NN Devan Namboothiri.

Dr. Namboothiri was apprenticed Ayurveda under Brahmashri Ashtavaidyan Vaidyamadhom Valiya Narayanan Namboothiri. He was also traditionally trained in various Indian educational disciplines such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Kalari and Darshanas (Indian philosophy) under Late Poomully Neelakanthan Namboodiripad (Aram Thampuran), who was a living legend of wisdom. Being a dedicated Ayurvedic physician who was blessed with the tutelage under two renowned Gurukula traditions, it was Dr. Namboothiri's visionary to establish an Ayurvedic healing center to preserve and propagate the wisdom he had acquired.

Under his guidance, a trust named SASTRI (Sri Neelakantha Ayurveda Shastra Trust & Research Institute) was also formed to nurture the indigenous education of Sanskrit and Sastras along with Ayurveda. Located on the banks of river Thoota, the entire landscape of Asokalayam is surrounded by lush greenery and the building is designed in traditional Kerala architecture. This creates a peaceful atmosphere conducive for Ayurvedic treatments.
