Asokalayam is an ayurveda chikitsa kendram and research center. The word Asokalayam comes from its Sanskrit roots – Asoka & Alaya. Asoka means absence of sorrow and Alaya means residence. Combination of these two words illuminates the meaning of a place without sorrow. Asokalayam is a place where all the physical and mental sufferings are resolved.
In ancient times, the village- Thiruvegappura itself was familiar as Asokalayam. The Lord of Thiruvegappura temple was known as Asokalayeshan on the premises of whom this hospital is located now.
"शरीरेन्द्रियसत्वात्मसंयोगो धारि जीवितम्।
नित्यगश्चानुबन्धश्च पर्यायैरायुरुच्यते॥"

The combination of body, senses, mind & soul together is called as Ayu. Life or life span depends upon the coexistence of these four principles.
Ayurveda is the science of life that seeks to treat and integrate body, mind & spirit using a comprehensive holistic approach based on theory of Thridoshas.
Dr.N.N.Devan Namboodiri had studied at Ayurveda college, Coimbatore. After completing academic studies(B.A.M.S), he started private practice and also acquired knowledge in various subjects like Vyakarana, Nyaaya, Meemmamsa, Advaitha Vedantha, Yoga, Ayurveda, Hasthyayurveda etc under Gurukula system from well- known scholars like Late Poomully Neelakandhan Namboodiripad, Late Vaidyamadhom Valiya Narayanan Namboodiri, Late Vaisravanath Vasudevan Namboodiri etc.
In India, any indigenous branch of knowledge is preserved and perpetuated through an unbroken lineage of Acharyas. Although the wisdom is being reinterpreted overtime, it is possible only by relying on the foundation established by its predecessors. A Guru represents this eternal tradition to his disciples.
Ayurveda is considered as an Upaveda of Atharva Veda. It is the science that aims to maintain the health of a healthy person and cure the diseases of the sick. Ayurveda is mainly based on theories like Thridosha Siddhaantha , Saptadhaatu Siddhaanta etc.
SASTRI has been functioning in the Honorable Memory of Guru Sri. Poomully Neelakanthan Namboodiripad, since 2006.This trust mainly aims to preserve the traditional education of Ayurveda and other Shastras.
